“How To Stop Imposter Syndrome from Killing Your Dreams“

Imposter syndrome is a term I’ve been seeing everywhere on social media for the last year and to be honest, I never really paid much attention to it. Little did I know that this was actually something that can impact your life significantly.
Imposter Syndrome according to Dictionary.com is “ anxiety or self doubt that results from persistently undervaluing one’s competence and active role in achieving success, while falsely attributing one’s accomplishments to luck or other external forces.”
These are some ways that Imposter Syndrome shows up in our lives:
  • We struggle with feeling qualified for something that not only did God qualify us for- but we put the hard work and training into it- so in reality it is something we can do but we’re lacking the self esteem.
  • This shows up in how we run our businesses, families, friendships, etc.
  • We refuse to go for the dreams God has put on our hearts because we don’t have the confidence to actually believe that is something we can do.

As you can see, imposter syndrome can seriously hold us back from living up to our God given potential. Matthew 25:14-30 really illustrates this point. In this parable we see three different examples of how these men chose to handle what their employer had given them. Two of the men took what their employer had given them and used it wisely – they invested the money their employer had given them. The third man chose to bury the money instead of investing it wisely. As you can imagine, the employer was greatly upset with him and called him wicked and lazy.

When we allow imposter syndrome to drive us to the shadows instead of using the gifts God has given us- we become like that third man in Matthew 25:14-30. The hard reality is- we are accountable for what we do and don’t do with what God has given us.

So how can we stop imposter syndrome from ultimately destroying our dreams?

    1) When the enemy tries to get us to forget who we are and who we belong to, we fight back with Scripture and remind him of who we are and who we belong to.

    2) We ask God to heal us from the lies we’ve been believing about ourselves and ask Him to help us walk in godly confidence.

    3) We do the opposite of what we would do under imposter syndrome. Instead of avoiding our dreams, we purposely pursue them. Instead of shrinking back in insecurity, we purposely rely on God’s grace to use the gifts He has given us.

    4) Lastly, we dare to take ownership and responsibility over our dreams and find little ways we can invest in them each day.
